Can the police help you if you have locked your keys in the car?
These days, newer vehicles often have some kind of digital key. You can lock and unlock your car from your smartphone using an app. But not all vehicles have this feature. If you locked your keys in the car, can you call the police to help you? If not, who can you contact to get back inside and drive again?
Is it a big deal if you locked your keys in the car?
Locking vehicles is the best way to deter thieves from stealing your car, but sometimes you get locked, which can be frustrating. Should you call the police to help you?
You can definitely call the police for help if you find you’ve locked yourself out of your car. In some cases, they will be happy to stop and help you find your keys. However, they will not always be so willing.
The police are trying to protect the citizens of the city, so they can be busy with other more important calls. If they are always ready to help, you may have to wait a while for someone to show up and help you unlock the car.
If the situation is serious, they will probably appear within minutes. For example, you may have locked your keys in the car while your baby is in the back seat. This would be considered an emergency and officers should be notified to ensure you can get back into the vehicle and your baby is safe.
What else can you do if you’ve locked your keys in the car?
If the situation is not serious, there are still many other ways to get inside. Roadside assistance is one of them. If you happen to have roadside coverage in your insurance plan, you can call and have a tow truck come and unlock the vehicle for you. This, of course, would be paid for by your insurance, or part of it would be covered.
You can also hire a locksmith. They get calls several times a year from other drivers who have done the same thing as you. However, you can expect to pay for this service. It could cost $75 and up depending on who does it and what they had to do to unlock your vehicle. Locksmiths may charge nothing if a child or pet is locked inside in hot weather.
Locking your keys in your car can be a frustrating experience. But know that there are options that can help you when you need them.
