Fairfield poet wins prize in state competition
Fairfield poet Bill Graeser was again recognized for his poetry, winning third place out of 673 entries in a contest sponsored by the Iowa Poetry Association.
Her prize was awarded in the Lucille Morgan Wilson Competition, one of 12 competitions for the 2022 Iowa Lyric Poetry Competition, which had 1,800 total entries.
This is the second year in a row that he has won third place. In previous years, he won a runner-up and the Norman Thomas Memorial Award.
Additionally, his accomplishments include a nomination for a major national award. Each year, the Iowa Poetry Association selects the top 300 poems for inclusion in an anthology called “Lyrical Iowa”; of the 340 poems published in “Lyrical Iowa 2021” last year, Graeser’s third poem was one of five shortlisted to be nominated for a prestigious Pushcart Prize.
“At each poetry contest, we are amazed not only by the amount of entries we receive — nearly two thousand from all over Iowa — but by the quality of the poems,” said Marilyn Baszczynski, editor of the annual “Lyrical Iowa” anthology. “Our expert judges, nationally renowned editors and writers themselves, commented on the difficulty of selecting just a handful of winners. Graeser’s well-crafted, restrained, yet evocative writing has earned him multiple accolades for the work that he sends us. We congratulate him and wish him a good continuation. »
Graeser, who works as a locksmith at Maharishi International University in Fairfield, has been writing poetry since 1992. In addition to “Lyrical Iowa,” his poetry has appeared in the “North American Review,” the “Chiron Review” and d other journals.
He is also the author of two collections of poetry. Some of his poems can be found at www.billgraeser.com.
In this year’s high school competition, poems by three students from Maharishi School in Fairfield were selected for inclusion in the “Lyrical Iowa 2022” anthology. These students are Ishita Mukadam, Zoe Soares and Carlotta Kriesel.
