Planned parenthood settling in Oregon and Idaho border town | Idaho News
ONTARIO, Ore. (AP) — Planned Parenthood is leasing medical space in Ontario City, on the Oregon-Idaho border.
Planned Parenthood did not confirm its plans for the space, but said it was bracing for an influx of out-of-state patients seeking abortions in Oregon due to multiple legal challenges to the right to abortion, Oregon Public Broadcasting reported.
Earlier this year, they successfully lobbied the Oregon legislature to set aside $15 million in an unrestricted fund for reproductive health equity.
“No matter what happens, we will be there for our neighbors in and out of state, and continue to meet the needs of our patients,” said Kenji Nozaki, chief affiliate operations officer at Planned Parenthood Columbia Willamette. . “We stand ready to support anyone who claims their legal right to decide if and when to get pregnant.”
The office space that Planned Parenthood leases in Ontario previously housed the Four Rivers Health Clinic, a non-profit organization serving people without health insurance.
Group chief executive Joe Recla said Four Rivers will use rental income to continue supporting uninsured patients.
A family planning clinic in Ontario could be an important outpost in the high desert for access to abortion and other reproductive health care services, ahead of an expected U.S. Supreme Court ruling this summer that could undo Roe v. Wade, the man of nearly 50 years historic decision on abortion.
The small town in Ontario is about an hour’s drive from Boise, Idaho.
Idaho has two trigger laws criminalizing abortion at all stages of pregnancy that would go into effect upon a successful legal challenge of Roe v. Wade.
Oregon has no legal restrictions on abortion, but the state does have a clinic that performs abortions east of the Cascade Mountains in Bend. For those seeking an abortion in the east and northeast of the state, the closest clinics are out of state in Boise or Walla Walla, Washington.
